National Catholic Sisters Week Celebrates Religious Life

ncsw posterWe all have stories to tell, stories about who we are as women of the Church, Daughters of the Holy Spirit, gifted with a special mission to bring the love of God to a world desperately in need of that love. The first National Catholic Sisters Week, March 8-14, challenged us to do just that.

But how to do that? Some possible answers were given a recent conference held at St Katherine's University in Minneapolis, MN. Two of our Sisters, Sr. Therese Vanasse, our vocation director, and Sr. Pat Moons, joined over 200 Sisters and college women to explore the stories we have to tell: how we experience our call to religious life, how we live out that call in community, mission, and ministry, how we can share the vibrant message of Christ with all we encounter daily.  Through prayer, liturgy, music, workshops, and simple conversation, we heard each others' stories and were enriched and challenged by them.

Two things especially highlighted the weekend: a panel discussion led by former CNN newscaster Soledad O'Brien and a beautiful and prayerful liturgy marked by dance, music that invited all to participate, and a homily that challenged us to live our missions in a way that shows that we are truly alive in the Spirit. The panel was both inspiring and moving as four Sisters from different communities shared the stories of their call to religious life and of the Sisters who inspired them.

We were also challenged to take what we experienced and learned back to our communities, to be creative in finding ways to invite our Sisters, young and old, to share their own stories, to celebrate who we are as vowed women. In the Province, we shared a special prayer service focused on our life and mission; our retired sisters also enjoyed the video, "Women and Spirit,"  based on the recent exhibit sponsored by the LCWR.

National Catholic Sisters Week will be an annual event, but not just an event, a call and a celebration on religious life. We invite you topray for all the Sisters who have touched your life, especially the members of our community.
