Welcome to the Inland Empire!

Pat MoonsPicture a multi-cultural parish of 4000 families, spread over two towns and the Morongo Indian reservation, a parish made up of  a community of communities: Anglo, Hispanic, Southeast Asian, Filipino, African-American, Nigerian, Native American. That’s St. Kateri’s, the parish I’m missioned to here in Southern California’s Inland Empire.

signSt. Kateri’s is one of 91 parishes in the diocese of San Bernardino, the fifth-largest diocese in the United States. A vibrant diocese, taking in an area larger than the states of Connecticut and Massachusetts combined, it sees its life and mission centered on bringing the Good news of the Gospel to all people in the area through a welcoming hospitality, faith-sharing, collaboration, and reconciliation. This vision is reflected in St. Kateri’s mission of  evangelization, community-building, and outreach. It’s a very active parish with a strong sense of social justice—citizenship classes, soup kitchen and food bank, health ministry, Habitat for Humanity group, liturgies, activities, and programs in two languages.

As pastoral associate, I’ve found myself involved in a variety of ministries: coordinating various liturgies, acting as a resource person for different groups, helping on a youth retreat, developing new programs and assisting with on-going ones. It’s an exciting ministry and one that I’m privileged to be part of.
