nigeria cardSister Gertrude Lanouette, our provincial, and I have just returned from Nigeria, where we were privileged to join members of our international spiritual Family in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the presence of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in Nigeria and the definitive commitment of 12 of our Nigerian Sisters. On Saturday, October 18, we entered a church packed with Bishops, Priests, Sisters, family and friends to sing and dance our thanksgiving during a dynamic five and a half hour celebration.

The expressions of gratitude continued throughout our 10-day visit. The memory of the dedicated service of all the missionaries whose labor of love founded and nurtured the Vice-Province of Nigeria lives in the heart of the people whose lives have been touched by this presence. Over and over we heard mention of Sisters Catherine Sottak, Marie Gabrielle Demars, Lorraine Duval, Irene Charpentier, Marie Jeannette Berube, and of course, Jeannine Legere, who remains with them to this day.

We had the opportunity to visit 5 of our schools, where some 2,500 children between the ages of 2 ½ and 17 are receiving quality education, despite great odds – unstable or non-existent electricity, unimaginably poor roads, lack of resources etc. Everywhere we were welcomed with warm, energetic African hospitality and saw first-hand the dynamism, and dedication of our Sisters and their lay co-workers. We were deeply moved by what the Holy Spirit is doing among them.

We thank God for the opportunity afforded to us to experience first-hand the development of our Nigerian Vice-Province and the warm hospitality of our Family there. We will continue to ask God’s blessing on Nigeria and its people.

E ku se! Well done! E se o! Thank you!
