An Invitation to Joy

Blessed Virgin MaryIt was on December 8th, 1706 that Marie Balavenne and Renée Burel committed themselves to live together to glorify the Triune God as they reached out to meet the needs of those around them especially the children and the ill.  They carried out their humble service to others by modeling their self-giving on that of Mary, the chosen Mother of Jesus.  The feast of the Immaculate Conception has been celebrated by the Daughters of the Holy Spirit over the years as their Foundation Day, and Mary has remained the model and the protectrice of our international Congregation.

It is in the spirit and open attitude of expectation and inspiration that we invite you to join us in our timely reflection on the mystery of new Life and unique relationship with our God that Mary models for us, all of us who believe in the Love and Goodness of our Triune God.  Together then we reflect and pray:

Advent is a time for waiting; we sing again and again “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. We yearn for the coming of the Christ child. We wait.  And what of Mary?  What is her experience? She too waits and longs. It is Life growing in her; we long for that Life to grow in us too.  Mary Immaculate, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, emptying herself, to be made full: free of sin, full of grace; free to be, full of joy. This fullness is none other but joy, the joy of knowing that our God dwells in her. It is this joy that sets her in motion, that nourishes and guides her in her daily life. And what about us?

Let this be our prayer: Mary Immaculate, graced by our God, you emptied yourself of all that would keep you from the total gift of your self to Life itself.  You became the dwelling place of our loving God. It is this presence which was the source of all your joy, for “Joy is the echo of God’s life in us.” Teach us what we must do, and be, in order to bear Life and joy to our world today.  Ask your Son, who dwelt in you and who dwells in us, to be our continued source of growth and Love. Amen.
