Make Straight The Way

the way
"A voice cries, 'Prepare in the wilderness a way for Yahweh.  Make a straight highway for our God across the desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low'."   (Isaiah  40: 3-4)

Each of us travels a unique path to reach our final destination - God's heaven. However, each of us can say that at times we lose faith, we veer away, and fall off the way. Some of us make only slight detours while others become completely lost and are floundering in the darkness of the wilderness.

The season of Advent provides us with the ideal time for examining our individual paths. What are our particular paths like? Have we strayed? Have we lost our way? As we prepare for the miracle of Christmas let us take time to look at our lives, to try to straighten our roads once again. What are the low points, the chasms? What are the hilly and mountainous obstacles that we have put in our own way?

The true path may be hidden to us. Straightening the paths does not happen all at once. We get back on the route step by step, one at a time. This Advent may we wait in faith for the light as Mary did. She did not know what the future held for her and how it was to happen yet she accepted God's call regardless of what this might entail. Let us then, look to Mary as our model for living in the love of God in the joy and peace of Christmas.

"Then the glory of Yahweh shall be revealed and all humankind shall see for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken."   (Isaiah  40: 5)
