World Day of Consecrated Life
February 2, 2015
Feast of the Presentation

Consecrated Life “Something which has existed since the beginning, which we have heard, which we have
seen with our own eyes, which we have watched and touched with our hands,
the Word who is life…We are telling you this…
so that our joy may be complete.”  (1 John 1: 1-4)

On February 2, 2015, the feast of the Presentation, the Church celebrates the World Day of Consecrated Life.  The practice was begun by Pope John Paul in 1997.  The celebration of this day, along with that of this Year of Consecrated Life, is meant to give thanks for religious life, to recall its past and to look to the future with hope for religious life in the spirit of joy. Pope Francis has expressed that religious have answered a call from God, in which God has said “You are important to me, I love you, I am counting on you”.  (Rejoice – 10). This call is one of following Christ, of living so as to incarnate the Good News.  It is the call to “take on Jesus’ way of living”.  (Rejoice – 13)  It is a way of service of bringing the joy of God to the people. We religious are invited to “Wake up the World” (Rejoice – 22) to be witnesses.

Pope John Paul had three purposes for setting aside the World Day of Consecrated Life. The first is to answer people’s need to praise the Lord more solemnly and give thanks for the great gift of consecrated life. Secondly, the day is to promote the knowledge of, and esteem for consecrated life. Finally, Consecrated persons are invited to celebrate what the Lord has accomplished in them and through them.

Consecrated LifeAs Daughters of the Holy Spirit, we can look back through our history at our own call as individuals and as a congregation.  We look at how we have answered that call and the way we have “shared the joy of knowing the Risen Christ”. (Chapter Orientations)  In the light of our DHS religious commitment we continue to look at our sharing of the Good News and how we “create the means to live in the Spirit of Pentecost”.

But the effectiveness of our lives has depended upon YOU, who have worked with us throughout the years and assisted us in living the message of Christ and in bringing it to others. So we would love to hear from YOU and share your thoughts about how a DHS has marked your life with joy and the Gospel message. We will be happy to respond to your ideas and your ongoing creativity as we strive to continue to give thanks to our God and to share the true inner joy that reaching out to others brings.
