DHS 2015 Jubilee Celebration

On a weatherwise absolutely perfect mid June Sunday afternoon the chapel at the Provincial House in Putnam filled to near capacity in a spirit of joy and exhilaration as 15 Sisters and 2 Associates celebrated their years of religious profession and/or covenant in the Congregation.

The Jubilee Choir, a combination of Sisters and laity, under the direction of Sr. Irene Fortier and the gifted organist Mrs. Lorraine White, set the tone for the liturgical ceremony with a robust and inspiring rendition of “Here I am Lord” to accompany the procession of jubilarians, Knights of Columbus, province administrators, clergy and his Excellency Michael R. Coté, Bishop of Norwich, main celebrant for this special occasion.

The meaningful ceremony featured a note of welcome by Sr. Gertrude Lanouette, Provincial, a homily by long time friend and honorary DHS, Rev. Laurence LaPointe, the renewal of vows and covenants by the jubilarians, and the presentation of symbolic gifts in addition to the traditional bread and wine of the offertory. The closing hymn, ‘O Jour le Plus Beau de ma Vie’, (O Most Beautiful Day of My Life) resounded through the chapel and into the narrow corridors as the jubilarians and their many guests gave thanks to God once more and made their way to a delightful luncheon.

During the meal a delegation from the local council of the Knights of Columbus meandered through the busy dining rooms and individually presented each jubilarian with a hand-made certificate of recognition and congratulations for her years of service to God’s people

The afternnon flew by all too quickly, and as guests shared hugs and words of farewell, the one note that could be heard and felt resonating from each group was the joy and love and appreciation that had characterized every aspect of our celebration from the retreat day on Friday, so ably directed by the Rev. Ed Dempsey, to the celebratory dinner on Saturday evening, sponsored by the Provincial Team at a local restaurant, through the photography sessions on Sunday morning, the well-planned noon meal at the PH on Sunday and then the pièce de resistance, the liturgy of “thanksgiving for having been called”.
