Sr. Constance Charette, DHS enters life eternal

Constance Charette DHSSr. Constance (Connie) Charette (Stephen of the Sacred Heart) has gone to rest in the loving arms of her God after succumbing to the violence of cancer.

Connie was born in Leominster, MA on April 20, 1940, one of six children of Camille and Alice (Meunier) Charette. Knowing the Daughters from her school days at St. Cecilia, Connie entered the Congregation in September of 1958 and pronounced her first vows at the Provincial House in Putnam on July 2nd, 1960.

She completed her undergraduate studies with a degree in Education at the Annhurst College campus of the former Diocesan Sisters’ College and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies from the University of Detroit. Her teaching career included elementary schools in CT and VT and 5 years (1969-74) at Putnam Catholic Academy, a coed secondary school administered by the order in Putnam. From the classroom Sr. Charette moved to Campus Ministry at the University of California at Davis and later transitioned back to the East Coast to serve the Province as Directress of Formation and Provincial Councilor. She also  ministered in Providence, RI in the chaplaincy program at Miriam Hospital and the Dorcas Place literacy center for women. In 1995 Sr. Connie was appointed Provincial of the DHS USA and within a few months was elected General Councilor and resided in France for the next 12 years.

Upon returning to the U.S. in 2008 Connie found her niche ministering as a Community Organizer for Pernet Family Services in Worcester, MA and serving as directress of the East Coast DHS Associates. In August of 2013 Connie felt called to serve the Congregation by accepting to be missioned in Burkina Faso, Africa to work with the younger Sisters in that part of the world. However, Divine Providence had other plans for her, and within two months Connie returned to Putnam because of serious health issues. While dealing with the cancer Sister continued her service to the Province as Coordinator of the Provincial Team responsible for the large community in residence at the Provin cial House and as Advisor of the East Coast Associates. She held these two beloved and joy-giving ministries until the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 15th when she peacefully rendered her soul to the Spirit of New Life who had gifted her in so many ways and us through her giving and generous nature.

Sr. Connie’s loved ones will gather to honor her life and to share memories on Friday, December 18th from 5-8 pm at the Provincial House Chapel at 72 Church St. in Putnam. There will be a prayer service at 7:15 that same evening. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the chapel on Saturday, December 19th at 11:00 am. Enterment will be in the DHS section of St. Mary Cemetery on Providence Street in Putnam.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Retirement Fund of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit and may be mailed to the Development Office at 72 Church St. Putnam, CT 06260.
