Waiting for the Light

stable sceneAdvent has been a time of waiting. We have been waiting for “the true light which enlightens everyone.” It is the time of waiting for the “the Word to become flesh and make his dwelling among us.”  (John 1:9-14)  How are we spending this time of waiting? “Prepare the way of the Lord.” If we are to be truly ready to open our hearts to the arrival of “the Word made flesh”, the Lord of Life and Light, what do we need?

In the midst of all the holiday preparations, of shopping for gifts, decorating, cooking, and parties, we need to stop to ponder the true reason we are doing all of this. Instead of praying to find the newest technological gadget or the latest style clothing under the Christmas tree, our prayers ought to be for those things which constitute the real meaning of Christmas. As we get closer to Christmas, in this year of Mercy let our prayers be about mercy and light, peace and joy, hope and grace. Let us open our hearts to joy, to peace and justice, to forgiveness and acceptance.

handssun and cloudsHaving done this our hearts will then be open.  We will be able to rejoice with the angel:
Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to those
in whom his favor rests.”

We can celebrate and share the “good news" of the blessed message of Christmas.
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all you lands.
Sing to the LORD; bless his name
Announce his salvation,
day after day.
Tell his glory among the nations;
among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.    (Psalm 96)

A very Merry Christmas and the brightest of new years to all!
