Sister Carla Hopkins, DHS Enters Life Eternal

Carla Hopkins, DHSAfter several years of waiting for the Lord’s final call, Sister Carla entered life eternal early on the morning of January 7th.

Eunice Lucille was born to Charles and Laurette (Guillet) Hopkins on August 7, 1921 in the small town of Plainfield, CT. She entered the Novitiate of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in 1942 and professed her first vows in the Congregation a year later at the Provincial House in Putnam. She taught at St. Anne School in Hartford for a few years before returning to the Putnam area to complete her undergraduate studies at Annhurst College and her Master;s Degree from Boston College. She loved teaching and dedicated many years to the classroom at the elementary and college levels in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

In 1962 Sister made a life changing decision and accepted to be missioned in Chile where she worked with the poorest of the poor while “sharing the richness of the Chilean people”. It was during this special time of her life that Sr. Charles Edouard, her religious name, became known as Sr. Carla.

After her Chilean experience and a sabbatical time, Carla moved to the New London, CT area to begin working with Catholic Charities at the service of Hispanics, African Americans, Indians and Vietnamese poor who had resettled in the US after the fall of Saigon. In 1986 Sister undertook the task of overseeing the construction of the residence and clinic of the Haitian Health Foundation whose president was Dr. Jeremiah Lwney of Norwich, CT. After 6 years in this poorest country of the western hemisphere, Carla returned to Connecticut where she volunteered to work with families in transitional living programs, with the Juvenile Court System in an effort to assist abused and/or neglected children. Sister also offered her services in the Department of Probation in New London Superior Court. Sister also participated on committees for the campaign for human development, the governor’s advisory council on aging and also served as director of the DHS retirement program for 3 years.

In 2008 Sister moved to the Provincial House and Health Care Center after experiencing a serious decline in  her health condition.

Sister Carla had a contagious smile and a charismatic personality, and everyone who met her never forgot her.  She radiated grace and charm and the love of her fellow human beings.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Holy Spirit Provincial House in Putnam on Sunday, January 10th from 5-8 pm to share memories and to join in prayer honoring Sister Carla. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the same chapel on Monday, January 11th at 11:00 a.m.
