Newport St. Clare's' From 1909 to Model for the Future of Nursing Homes

Newport dedicationA quick read of our article archived on this site 18 months ago (DHS 1909 Project Thrives and Expands) offers the interesting history and details of the foundation and growth of St. Clare’s Home in Newport by the Daughters of the Holy Spirit.  Information on the timely beginnings to meet the needs of the elderly and underserved of the greater Newport area in 1909 is provided.   A quick run through the years lead us to the departure of the DHS from St. Clare’s in 2013 and the ground breaking events for the modification and construction of a new, state of the art facility under the auspices of the diocese.

While the new facility has not yet been opened to new residents, it was officially dedicated with full fanfare and ceremony under a brilliantly clear November 1st day, as the Bishop reminded everyone, it was All Saints Day, an appropriate day indeed to honor all those generous women and men who, over the past century, gave so much of themselves to maintain and grow  this practical and worthy facility.

Newport dedicationAmong those invited to participate in this culminating moment were Sr. Gertrude Lanouette, Provincial of the US Province of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, Sr. Madeleine Grégoire and Sr. Saundra Porter with the 2 latter having lived and worked at Newport/St. Clare’s for a combined total of 48 years of ministry.  The Sisters represented the founding group of the Home and were thrilled that one of the dedication plaques indicates this important role of the DHS in the history and development of this brand new facility with its extended services to the elderly offering various levels of graduated care under the same roof.

Commenting on the day’s events, Sr. Saundra said: “It was simply spectacular, beautiful and clearly embodies the future of nursing home care...it is obvious it was built with the residents in mind”.

Newport dedicationThe photos show the new building as well as the 3 Sisters admiring in appreciation the plaque acknowledging the DHS role in St. Clare’s history.
