Pentecost Reflection

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.”     (Acts 2)

holy spirit posterThe feast of Pentecost, celebrated on Sunday May 15th. is a feast of LOVE, honoring our God who is LOVE. Jesus’ followers were huddled together after Christ’s Ascension. They were bewildered as they waited to know what to do next. It was into this setting that the Holy Spirit came bearing gifts of love and boldness. The members of the group, now filled with the Spirit’s fire went forth to spread God’s love.

In this year of Marie Balavenne, it behooves us in a special way as Daughters of the Holy Spirit, to look at how this woman allowed the Spirit of God to penetrate and open up her life. Marie Balavenne was a woman of deep prayer who was ever attentive to the call of the Spirit and passionate in serving her God. As she saw to the needs of the people around her she let herself be led in the “boldness of the Spirit”.

In celebrating this feast, let us ponder how Marie Balavenne’s legacy translates into our own lives today.

holy spirit posterPope Francis in his Pentecost homily speaks of today’s needs when he says: “The world needs men and women who are not closed in on themselves but filled with the Holy Spirit…The world needs the courage, hope, faith and perseverance of Christ’s followers…The world needs the fruits of the Holy Spirit: ‘love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control’.”  (Gal  5:22)

“We follow the risen Christ by living in the Spirit of Pentecost.”  (Rule of Life  5)

We invite all of you to join us in allowing the Spirit to guide us and to transform us into persons of mercy, persons of love and persons alive in and energized by the Spirit.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful 24/7, 365 days per year.  Amen, Amen.  Alleluia!
