Music With A Mission At The PH

What better way to spend an early December mid afternoon than enjoying the smooth relaxing sound of New Age music performed with state of the art technology by a trio of professional musicians?

That was the treat savored by an audience of one hundred or so neighbors, friends, acquaintances and family who gathered with the Sisters in the Provincial House gymnatorium to welcome the Advent/Christmas season.

Tim Janis, internationally known composer, musician and now cinematographer, along with two of his colleagues, coaxed their violin, flutes and keyboard to breathe life and emotion into the vibrant and sensually delightful visuals that framed the performers on both sides. The simple staging allowed the listeners to enter directly into the context of the laid- back and inspiring sounds and sights generated by the performance. Secular music focused on nature as well as some time- tested Christmas carols we all know led the awed audience to crave more of the same.

Mr. Janis had come to know Sr. Gertrude Lanouette, Provincial, when she ministered at Tabor House in Hartford a few years back. It was with open heart and smiles that Tim accepted to perform for the DHS on a pro bono basis, in line with his often stated goal of producing ‘music with a mission’. Admission to the concert was free, but we did accept a good will offering for one of the Missions of the DHS in Cameroon, Africa, the Jeannette Horbaita Center, that serves orphaned and homeless women, teaching them life skills such as sewing, knitting, etc.

Of course, traditional Christmas goodies satiated everyone’s palate as the concert drew to a close and the socializing began. Tim and company warmly greeted guests one on one, chatted and autographed cd’s  and made everyone feel as though they had known them forever.

For more information on Tim Janis, you can check out You Tube or simply Google him. Tim has a film coming out soon “Buttons”.  Check out your local theaters for show dates.

While the photos hint at the highlights of the program, the full impact of Tim’s music can only be felt by listening and allowing oneself to be penetrated by its beauty.
