Requiescat in pace, Sister Yvonne


Sr Yvonne MartellSr. Yvonne Martell, Daughter of the Holy Spirit, entered eternal life on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at St. Joseph Living Center in  Windham, CT  

She was born Yvonne Martell on January 3, 1923, in Swanton, VT the daughter of Adelard and Yvonne (l’Espérance) Martell. Yvonne entered religious life at Holy Spirit Provincial House in Putnam in 1943 and made her religious profession there in 1947 taking the name of Sr. Jean Marie.

Sister Martell started her professional career as a teacher at the elementary level in schools staffed by her order in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Yord State. 

In 1962 she left the classroom and tried her hand as a Nurse’s Aide at St. Joseph Villa, a DHS convalescent home in Putnam. Feeling that this was her new calling, she began her studies as an LPN at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Diploma in hand,l she began her new ministry as a nurse in Putnam, then in Bridgeport and Providence, RI. Her nursing career then offered her the opportunity to return to her home state and eventually to her own home town of Swanton. In 1992 where she added domestic services to her part-time nursing. Nine years later Yvonne moved to Essex Junction, VT where she was involved in Pastoral Ministry for Holy Family Parish.  She thoroughly enjoyed her work, the close friends and many contacts she made and, of course,  her little dog. With the years her health declined and she retired to the Holy Spirit Provincial House in Putnam in 2010 and was admitted to the DHS Health Care Center one year after her return. In the summer of 2016, once the new St. Joseph Community had been established in Windham, Sr. Yvonne joined 21 of her Sisters at their new home from which she entered life eternal after a prolonged illness

Sister is survived  by her sisters and brothers in the DHS Spiritual Family as well as well as by several nieces.

Calling hours  for Sr. Yvonne and extended family will be at the Provincial House in Putnam on Monday, April 9 from 6-8 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:15. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 10 at 11 AM. also at the DHS chapel at 72 Church Street in Putnam.  She will lie at rest in the DHS section of St. Mary Cemetery on Providence Street in Putnam.
