Rotary Club Partners With DHS for Women's Center

check presentationThe Jeannette Horbaita Center welcomed its first students in 2015 fulfilling the dream of the Cameroonian Sisters to provide a formation center for girls and women, especially those who are orphaned, street dwellers or of little financial means.

The Center, located in Maroua, Cameroon, Africa received ministerial approval in 2016 and now boasts an enrollment of 95 students.  The program offers 3 years of preparation in such areas as agriculture, sewing, embroidery, cooking, technology and secretarial skills. Its purpose is to empower women by honing their skills and forming them as guides and examples for all whose lives they touch and impact at the personal and professional levels. The growth of the Center is seen in the enrollment: 50 girls/women in the first year, 30 in the second and 15 in the third. The effect of the program will be put to the test once the initial group of women receive their diplomas this year.

The Center, funded initially in large part by a special fund of the Congregation, now relies heavily on new monies from outside groups, associations and individuals to continue the program and to enhance it by assuring adequate supplies and equipment and providing strong professional staffing on an ongoing basis.

Sr. Gertrude Lanouette, Provincial of the United States Province of the DHS and Françoise G. Gauthier, PhD, Development Director for the DHS USA, had the opportunity recently to introduce the members of the Rotary Club of Putnam, CT to the concept and realities of the Horbaita Center. In response to their presentation and to the high ideals and purposes  of the Center, the Rotarians agreed to donate a total of $4,000.00, $2000 now and another $2000 next year, to assist in the renewal of educational materials and tools in an effort to maintain and reinforce  programs and qualified teachers at the Center.

God is good. The Rotary Club of Putnam clearly reflects that goodness and compassion. We are extremely grateful for their presence in our lives and praise the gift this organization is to individuals and groups in need at the local and international levels.

We welcome our new partners who help us underline the importance of our internationality in such a concrete and blessed way. May the Spirit continue to bless everyone collaborating in this wonderful project for the advancement of girls and women in Cameroon. Who knows what potential it may hold for the future of all humankind?
