The Broadening of my DHS Experience

I had never been to our Latin American Vice Province.

In 1962 the US province missioned 13 sisters to Chile and in 1984 the mission was expanded when some of our French sisters were called to Peru.

This year the Daughters of the Holy Spirit's international leadership meeting, the Council of the Congregation (CC), was held in Peru. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be immersed in the life of our DHS Spiritual Family in this Latin American country.

Upon arriving in Lima, I was welcomed by a group of other DHS coming for the CC, sisters in the Vice Province, and Peruvian DHS Associates. It was a warm  "Bienvenida".

We were soon on a 2 ½ hour ride to our international community in Huaura where we were welcomed with hugs, kisses and a variety of foods and beverages in a typical Peruvian manner. Our two days in Huaura gave us the chance to share life with the sisters of the community, visit the sites of their ministries, meet numerous DHS associates, partake of  a meal they prepared for us, and most of all, listen to each person's story of their journey as associates. We were touched by the way the Spirit is working in each of their lives.

Time flew and  soon we were on our way back to Lima, the capital city, where the CC would soon begin. Before our official meetings started an associate couple, Felix and Lupe, were our tour guides to the Congress, the historic area, and the Basilica of Saint Dominic. After the closing of the CC they acted as our guides again on a pilgrimage to visit numerous ministries started by the Daughters  many years ago.  Even though our sisters are no longer in this area, these nurseries, soup kitchens, etc., have continued to serve the needy in the area thanks to the leadership of our DHS Associates.  What a gift to know that our works are continuing and even growing! On Sunday, the day before our departure, we gathered with our sisters and a large group of DHS Associates around the Table of the Lord for Mass, shared a delicious noon meal with them, and exchanged stories about our provinces/vice provinces while the associates spoke to us about the meaning of faith and service in their lives as members of our DHS Spiritual Family.

Throughout our time in this lovely country there was much picture taking by both sisters and associates. It was obvious that everyone wanted to capture and treasure the memories created during this time we shared as DHS Spiritual Family in Peru where the Daughters of the Holy Spirit have been in mission for 34 years.

Needless to say, I returned home enriched by my Peruvian experience , and I would like to think, with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the blessing that it was to live first-hand this dimension of our DHS internationality.
