DHS on the Road Again...Refreshed

Sr Linda BabineauWhile millions of US drivers focused on the rising price of gas as they prepared to hit the road for the long holiday weekend, 8 Daughters of the Holy Spirit met at the Provincial House to complete a driver refresher course that is asked of DHS in the USA who drive after age 75.

The first part of the course was a 2 hour seminar presented by Mark Tyers of Christian Brothers Insurance Company back in April. The session covered all essential parts of driving under all conditions. The second part of the refresher course entailed a one to one interaction between the driver and the instructor to check a variety of skills needed for safe and secure driving. The final part of the assessment was the road test.

Four Sisters completed the entire process on the day of the seminar in April. The remaining Sisters were scheduled one hour apart on Friday, May 25th.

When asked to evaluate the assessment process the general comments of the participants included that it was a fair process, it was good because it was practical and dealt with issues and situations that the drivers encounter on a daily basis either on the highway or driving around Putnam, Moosup or even Hartford, CT.

The assessment program has been in effect in the Province for a number of years and has improved and been updated with time. Each Sister is expected to participate in a similar evaluation every 5 years after the first assessment. Most will agree that as with all skills in life, it is of the utmost importance to evaluate, hone and sharpen them for one's personal gain but, more importantly, to assure as much as possible the safety of others on the road.
