MARIE ALICE MERCIER, member of the Secular Branch of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit since its foundation in 2003, entered life eternal on Monday, November 13, 2023.

Marie Alice was born in Plainfield, CT on January 30, 1927 to Edmund and Marilda Mercier. She attended local elementary schools and Plainfield High School. She also attended St. Anne’s Academy in Marlborough, MA after obtaining an academic scholarship. After high school she entered the Congregation of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit and took the name Sr. Marie Edmund in religious life. She dedicated her professional years to teaching, doing parish pastoral work and assisting with the local hospice program. She also spent several years caring for her aged parents and accompanied them until their deaths.

Marie Alice loved people; she enjoyed meeting new folks and spending time socializing and assuring that everyone would share long conversations and many hours of good times with her.

Marie Alice moved to Matulaitis Nursing Home in 2013 when her health declined quickly. She was in residence there when the Lord called her home.

Marie Alice was known for her hearty laugh and her high energy. In her later years she took delight in discussing theology questions with her contacts and visitors. She insisted that she be allowed to participate in all religious and secular activities available.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated in her honor at her home parish of St. John’s on Railroad Avenue in Plainfield on Wednesday, November 29th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the family plot in St. John’s Cemetery on Route 12 Norwich Road in Plainfield, CT. Marie Alice, rest in peace as you live in the joy and love of your God forever.
