For Sr. Theresa Spittle, DHS, California is no stranger. She has been serving in this lovely corner of the western USA since 1966. A very long distance from her birthplace of Burlington, VT, it has become her home away from home.
Having worked in various capacities over the years, Theresa is now heavily involved with the St. Vincent de Paul group in Stockton. Through this charitable organization Sister does outreach to families and individuals who have fallen on difficult times so when the possibility arose for obtaining a grant from the DHS Mission Fund to support an active ministry in which a DHS is involved, Theresa immediately submitted a request for her St. Vincent de Paul group.
The financial assistance was granted, and Sister and her fellow volunteers purchased food and other basic essentials, sorted them, packaged them, invited heads of families and persons living alone to come by the Center to receive their gifts. Sister Theresa also accompanied other volunteers in filling their vehicles with goods and in delivering them to people on the streets and in their makeshift shanties and/or homes.
The DHS Mission Grant annually offers the Daughters of the Holy Spirit the opportunity to live their commitment to the Christ message of service and love for others. It provides an avenue that allows the DHS to be the hands and feet and the compassionate heart of Christ among the residents of cities and towns and parishes where they themselves live and work.
